Position Purpose:

The Welder/Fabricator II assists with routine welding and fabrication projects in the welding shop in order to put together mechanical structures or parts with precision. Prepares materials, sets up workpieces and operates and maintains welding equipment, using knowledge and experience of various welding equipment, methods and techniques. Works independently or under supervision, depending on the complexity of task. The Welder/Fabricator II exercises a solid level of skill in the trade and develops additional skills under the supervision of the Welder/Fabricator III.

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

• High school graduate or equivalent.
• Professional welding qualification from in-person trades school.
• Minimum three years welding experience plus 3-5 years in the building trades.
• Valid drivers license and be qualified under the terms of the Dartmouth College Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle policy. Ability to complete a DOT physical examination.
• Solid understanding of various welding methods and techniques.
• Demonstrated experience operating and maintaining welding equipment including MIG, TIG, and arc welding machines, plasma and torch cutters.
• Able to read and understand building plans and welding symbols on fabrication drawings.
• Solid understanding of use and operation of machine shop tools including all hand tools, all power tools, welding and brazing processes.
• Experience with drilling and tapping holes for screws and bolts. Well versed with abrasives, various grits and backing paper.
• Knowledge of shop mathematics with ability to measure and cut material to specific dimensions and angles. Able to read and understand building plans and welding symbols on fabrication drawings.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions and work independently under minimal supervision, exercising sound judgment and applying strong problem-solving skills.
• Strong customer service skills and good communications skills. Ability to communicate with college personnel and building occupants.
• Computer skills on laptop, tablet and/or smartphone including basic word processing, spreadsheets and ability to use building system programs and work control system.
• Ability to document and record issues and procedures.
• Ability to perform demanding physical activity, work at heights and perform tasks requiring manual dexterity under physically difficult and/or strenuous conditions.
• Ability to weld in all positions.
• Is capable of participating in the Colleges respiratory protection program and of responding to alarms including potentially hazardous environments.
• Willingness to work overtime when required.
• Willingness to obtain further training which may be online, local in-person, or at a remote location.

Responsibilities:

• Plans and lays out work instructions, work orders, sketches, blueprints, specifications, etc. Demonstrates knowledge of shop mathematics with ability to measure and cut material to specific dimensions and appropriate angles.
• Sets up components for welding according to specifications.
• Demonstrates skill in using angle grinders and other tools to prepare the parts that must be welded. Aligns components using calipers, rulers, clamps and jibs to assemble materials and parts for welding.
• Determines appropriate welding equipment and method based on requirements, including MIG, TIG and arc welding machines, plasma and torch cutters.
• Welds components using manual or semi-automatic welding equipment in various positions (vertical, horizontal or overhead).
• Performs all welding to make systems complete and workable and repair machinery and other components by welding pieces and filling gaps.
• Test sand inspects welded surfaces and structure to discover flaws.
• Drills and taps holes for screws and bolts. Demonstrates knowledge of various fasteners and the appropriate application for given situations.
• Uses abrasives, grits and backing paper to finish end-product.
• Maintains welding shop and welding equipment good condition.

Learning from Senior Technicians:

Learns from Welder-Fabricator III via working with and understanding procedures:

• For example, receives clear and concise instructions; be educated accepting constructive input from senior technician performing work.
• While performing fabrication work. learns the procedures being taken and the reasoning behind the action.

Examples of developing skills:

• Determines when welding procedures, fixtures or methods must be modified or what factors, such as heat, voltage, amperage, length of time between passes, angle of welding rod or electrode during welding must be varied to achieve desired results.
• Learns processes such as brazing, soldering, surface hardening, annealing, metal spraying, and/or flame or arc cutting.
• Positions and controls the torch or arc and feeds welding rod or electrode to obtain weld bead size required and penetration required.

• Mentors Welder-Fabricator I
• While performing welder/fabricator work, explain the procedures being taken and the reasoning behind the action.
• When ready, allows the junior technician/s to perform the work under supervision.
