Overview The University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law invites applications for an Executive Director of Data & Educational Technologies to join the Thurgood Marshall Law Library. The Thurgood Marshall Law Library, located in Baltimore, is committed to innovation from evaluating emerging technologies to elevate the work of the law school and to support the robust, required legal research instruction program. Law school campus: Maryland Carey Law is located in downtown Baltimore near courthouses, government agencies, law and financial firms, nonprofit organizations, major-league sports facilities, theaters, and fine arts. The campus is in the greater Washington DC–Baltimore metropolitan region, close to I-95 and about 40 minutes from Washington by Amtrak or commuter rail. Job Summary The Executive Director of Data & Educational Technologies is responsible for managing and analyzing institutional data as a strategic asset across academic, administrative, and research functions, and for leading educational technology to enhance teaching, scholarship, and operations throughout the Law School. This requires communicating and coordinating with stakeholders (e.g., Administration, Academic Affairs, Office of Registration & Enrollment, Faculty and Students) in contexts such as survey design, data analysis, and training. The role emphasizes creativity, initiative, and identifying opportunities across diverse areas. It is a Library Faculty position with teaching responsibilities and reports to the Associate Dean for Library & Technology. As a member of the library and technology administration, this position partners to reflect UMB Core Values and the law school mission in services and operations. The successful hire will adapt to evolving needs (e.g., new or modified duties). Essential Responsibilities Information Architect Develop and pilot solutions to discrete problems and challenges through the innovative application of relevant technologies and information (e.g., knowledge management). Plan for and implement appropriate technologies for collaboration and information sharing. Support and optimize processes involving information and technologies in coordination with stakeholders and train others as appropriate (e.g., advance registration; journal petitioning process). Foster collaboration with departmental, university, and community partners to leverage resources and create new engagement models with legal and emerging technologies as appropriate. Data Analysis & Assessment Work with Law School administration and various departments to compile, analyze, and report data for accreditation and other purposes. Provide data analysis and recommendations to the Dean and stakeholders to support data‑driven assessment and decision‑making (e.g., student outcomes and curricular effectiveness). Develop and integrate assessment strategies and best practices for the library and the law school (e.g., Open Educational Resources). Ensure new initiatives and existing practices are developed, operationalized, and assessed to meet evolving needs. Educational Technologies Teach courses relating to the law and technology and/or legal research methods. Advise and assist with continual improvement of educational technology, including academic databases used for course management and registration. Identify, analyze, and evaluate best practices in emerging legal and educational technologies and communicate this information to audiences (e.g., educating faculty and students about topics such as Artificial Intelligence and the Law). Work with library, law school administration, and faculty to develop a strategic vision for technology’s role in the future of legal education at the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law. Qualifications Required Qualifications include: Master’s in Library and Information Science (MLIS) from an ALA‑accredited program and Juris Doctor (JD) from an ABA‑accredited program. Minimum of five years of academic library experience with at least three years in higher education. Preference for demonstrated experience in data analysis, survey design, and educational technology.

Ability to analyze data from multiple angles to identify weaknesses, trends, and opportunities. Aptitude for learning technology tools relevant to the role. Knowledge of contemporary concepts and practices in law librarianship and commitment to ongoing professional development. Strong diagnostic, problem‑solving, and project management skills. Experience in survey design and learning management systems. Experience in complex data management and analysis (especially Microsoft Excel). Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Understand the needs of legal education. Experience in strategic planning and administration. Ability to support faculty research with large data set analysis. Ability to advise faculty on strategies to collect and analyze data within their scholarship. Interest in statistics and empirical research methods. Teaching or training experience. Salary and Benefits The salary range is $130,000 to $145,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience. The position is a 12‑month library faculty appointment with expectations for permanent status and promotion within established timeframes. Benefits include 22 vacation days, 14 holidays, 15 sick days; comprehensive health insurance and retirement options; and tuition remission for employees and dependents at University System of Maryland schools.
