Overview Department: National Air and Space Museum Location: Washington, DC Compensation: $69,923 - $79,246 / year Open date: 09/12/2025 Closing date: 10/10/2025 Position type: Trust Fund Appointment type: Permanant/Indefinite Schedule: Full Time Duty location: Washington, DC Application Deadline: 10 October 2025 Description: The Smithsonian Institution, Undersecretary for Science & Research, National Air and Space Museum (NASM), collects, preserves, studies, and exhibits artifacts, archival materials and works of art related to the history, culture and science of aviation and spaceflight and the study of the universe. The NASM is administered as one museum with multiple locations and provides access to aviation and space history to millions of visitors each year. The incumbent serves as an Education Program Specialist, IS-1720-09, within NASM’s Bezos Learning Center (BLC) where they are responsible for supporting the development of educational programming, content, and applying systematic professional processes to ensure programming meets objectives. The position performs the following major duties. Responsibilities Education and Programming – 50%: Devises and researches the applicability of new learning techniques and technologies to advance the dissemination of institutional resources in physical or digital environments. Applies instructional design methods, educational technology training, design and development, and learning styles to facilitate educational programming within the institution in non-formal settings. Incorporates museum educational programs, resources, and materials with established educational principles to measure and assess participant proficiency. Works with the museum’s Business and Operations Team to purchase items related to BLC initiatives. Develops and delivers educational activities targeting BLC audiences, including all stages from conceptualization to design, development, piloting, and implementation. Provides reporting on project status, tracking progress against timeframes and notifying leadership of lag. Develops strategies to engage diverse audiences through digital platforms, including creating interactive content and increasing accessibility to NASM content. Technical Competence & Innovation – 25%: Proposes innovative strategies for developing and adapting educational programs to further the department’s mission; researches and implements new technologies to engage audiences. Utilizes the BLC digital infrastructure to broaden reach through virtual programs and products. Provides technical assistance for digital projects and collaborates with IT to ensure smooth operation of digital systems. Maintains technical understanding of learning environments, curriculum, and teaching standards for various learning styles and ages. Technical Documentation – 25%: Prepares drafts and mock-ups of informational products (digital presentations, brochures, learning guides, campaigns) to raise awareness of events or programming for the BLC. Supports developing procedures and tools to gather feedback and engagement data to guide programming. Evaluates BLC work, aligns educational goals with concepts to improve delivery and applicability of programming. Qualifications Education and Experience: To qualify, applicants must possess a bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from an accredited four-year college or university and/or 3-5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination. Experience items include: Practical knowledge in development and administration of educational materials for curated learning programs. Knowledge in providing technical assistance related to educational concepts for diverse learners. Skill in using learning instruments and data to identify appropriate materials for learning objectives. Skill in developing learning materials and resources to support programming. Ability to work in a team-based environment supporting academic enrichment activities. Ability to collaborate on program development and implementation for K-12 and lifelong learners. Ability to research and identify information to support educational programming. Ability to present information clearly to audiences with varying knowledge levels. Ability to establish effective working relationships with NASM staff, Smithsonian units, other museums, and community organizations. Ability to order equipment and track orders; ability to organize information and processes. Education completed outside the United States must be deemed equivalent to U.S. higher education; include this documentation in your application package.
